Discover the Authentic Treasures of Samos: Olive Oil and Soap

Samos, a hidden gem in the Aegean Sea, remains relatively unknown to tourists, lying a bit farther from the more popular Santorini and Mykonos. However, this island boasts a rich history, pristine Mediterranean waters, and a vibrant Greek culture that permeates every aspect of daily life. Among its many treasures, the olive stands out as a symbol of tradition, health, and craftsmanship. The production of olive oil and olive soap on Samos transcends mere industry; it is a vital part of Greek culture, embodying a timeless heritage. Almost every local family on the island has their own olive trees. This personal connection to olive oil underscores its enduring importance in Greek culture, even in the fast-paced modern world. In this article, we will explore the most authentic aspects of Samos through its olive oil and olive soap production.

The Rich History and Cultural Significance of Olive Oil in Greece

The olive tree and its fruits are steeped in countless myths, stories, and historical accounts. Archaeological discoveries from Minoan Crete and the Palace of Knossos reveal that the economy of that era heavily relied on olive oil. In Greek mythology, the olive tree was sacred to the goddess Athena, who gifted it to the city of Athens. In ancient times, Olympic victors were crowned with olive wreaths, and in classical Athens, the prized award for competition winners was the finest Attic olive oil. Homer referred to olive oil as "liquid gold," and Hippocrates emphasized its healing properties. The extraction of olive oil in Greece boasts a 4,000-year history, with 80% of Greek olive oil production classified as extra virgin, the highest quality in the world.

Greece also leads the world in per capita olive oil consumption, with each Greek consuming over 15 liters annually. Olive oil is a cornerstone of Greek traditional cuisine, renowned globally for its purity, excellent taste, and high nutritional value. It is considered to be one of the healthiest oils, and research suggests that its consumption is essential for a balanced diet.
Samos Olive Oil: A Liquid Gold
Samos olive oil is celebrated for its rich, robust flavor and myriad health benefits. High in antioxidants and healthy fats, it is a staple in the Mediterranean diet and is known for promoting heart health and longevity. The golden-green hue of Samos olive oil reflects the island's fertile soil and ideal climate, creating a product that is both delicious and nutritious—a modern superfood.
You can use extra virgin olive oil for nearly everything: making the perfect Greek salad dressing and basil pesto, crafting a light pasta sauce, marinating grilled chicken and beef kebabs, or roasting vegetables. Local olive oil is the starting point for every delicious pot of stew or perfectly charred roasted vegetables, and you can even use it for baking. Despite myths about olive oil's low smoke point and the formation of harmful compounds when heated, research has repeatedly debunked these claims. While olive oil's smoke point is lower than some other cooking oils, it remains stable at high heat, which is what truly matters.

Our first stop: Samos Olive Oil Soap Production Company

But now, after discussing the historical significance and numerous benefits, let’s embark on our journey. As the road winds along blue beaches and silver-green olive groves, we arrive at Ormos Marathokampos. Here, we make our first stop for a private tour of the Kentouris family's olive soap factory. This factory still operates traditionally, unchanged for the last 100 years, using only natural ingredients. The soaps are natural, biodegradable, environmentally friendly, and gentle on sensitive skin. They have a green color due to the chlorophyll in the olives, with no artificial coloring added. These versatile soaps are good for your skin and hair; it can even be used to wash clothes.

Only recently the company began adding natural aromas to their soap, while also maintaining a line of soaps with natural scents, just like in the old days. Impressively, this is a zero-waste production. The family uses all parts of the leftovers from olive oil production to fuel the machines that extract every last bit of oil from the olive pits, which is then used to make their green olive soap bars. In addition to soap, you can also buy natural creams made from beeswax, another locally produced product, combined with natural aromatic oils. If you appreciate natural, sustainable living and high-quality products, this place will surely captivate your attention.

Behind the Scenes at the Olive Oil Factory

After a scenic 30-minute drive, we arrive at Markou, a family-run olive oil factory renowned for its decades of experience and commitment to excellence in producing some of Greece's finest extra virgin olive oils. Our tour begins with an exploration of the cultural significance of olive oil locally and a detailed look into the production process.

Inside the factory, we are introduced to the machinery involved in olive oil production, gradually uncovering what defines high-quality olive oil. We learn that olives should be harvested before full ripeness and only cold-pressed to preserve their health benefits. The highlight of our visit is the tasting session, where we sample oils infused with various flavors such as herbs, lemon, orange, garlic, and even chili.

Our final stop is at the company’s store, where we are offered a selection of olive oils, olive paste, natural cosmetics made from olive oil, and souvenirs to take home — a lasting reminder of the flavors of Samos.
